Movie of the Day
The Women (1939) — A growing group of well-to-do women snipe, grieve, and stand (but mostly snipe) with each other as they experience love, divorce, and heartbreak with ever-offscreen men. This is a memorable movie, partly because of its all-star all-female cast, snappy dialogue, and vivid Technicolor fashion show segment, but mostly because this is tirelessly, in subject and style, a movie for women (and perhaps gay men), and unless you enjoy being in the middle of a gossipy book club, where hearsay, the hint of scandal, and another's comeuppance count as excitement, you best keep whatever testosterone you have remaining far, far away.
