Movie of the Day
Tennessee Johnson (1942) — Biopic about Andrew Johnson, covering his rise from a runaway apprentice to successful politician to impeached president. Introductory text admits to having to play loose with the facts which again begs the question as to whether a dramatization adds any benefit—especially when one feels that it is just being used as an excuse to make a contemporary point (not letting petty politics undermine American unity) under the guise of a history lesson. This may be sentimental and overdramatized but it isn't bad, perhaps due to an unexpected relevance arising from some fascinating and surprising (and depressing) parallels with our own last four years of national politics.
